Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection (Depo Shot)
Genetic name: medroxyprogesterone acetate – injectable suspension
Route: IM (intramuscular) – gluteal or deltoid muscle
Tx term/period: no longer than 2 years, unless there is no other option for the person’s condition.
Frequency: Every 3 months
Dose: 150mg/ml (150mg vial. Prefilled-syringe is available with 22g needle)
Side effects: irregular vaginal bleeding (most common), abdominal pain/discomfort, headache, weight gain, nervousness, dizziness, decreased libido.
Warning: Loss of bone mineral density (especially for teenagers and younger adults)
